Oasis Uganda

One of the projects that Oasis Uganda runs is in Beersheba.
The Beersheba Project is based in Musoto, Mbale, and was established in 2006. Musoto is a slum community with high unemployment and prevalent alcoholism (its main industry is brewing alcohol), where few children attend school and many girls are ‘married’ by their mid teens.
Beersheba was set up in partnership with the Redeemed Church Maluku to respond to the needs of vulnerable girls aged thirteen to sixteen, providing a comprehensive programme of education, training and support.
In order to have a lasting impact in the lives of the girls, their families and the wider community of Musoto are also involved in a variety of programmes that Beersheba runs. The overall aim of the Project is to equip and empower vulnerable people in this community so they can live positive and healthy lives.
This involves Education Activities:
• Basic literacy and numeracy lessons
• Life skills training including HIV/AIDS training and sexual health
• Sports, music and other recreational activities
• Counselling and emotional support
• Home visits to girls and their families
• Supporting girls to reintegrate back to school
Also Community Development Activities
• Carers of the girls in Beersheba meet regularly for training in agriculture, animal husbandry, Income Generation Activities, health, HIV and AIDS and parenting. This input ensures that parents and guardians take long term responsibility for the girls.
• Schools work -Taking “Esteem” relationships and self esteem course into local schools
• HIV and AIDS awareness workshops for the community
• The Beersheba Craft group – helping local women earn income through selling handicrafts
• ‘Beersheba Boys’ Football Club • Saturday Children’s Club
Sara’s life was transformed by the community....
“My name is Sara and I joined Beersheba Project in January 2006. Before I joined, I had dropped out of school in P4 because I did not have confidence in myself. During the time I spent at Beersheba I learnt numeracy, literacy and life skills which gave me courage to go back to school. I have been able to go back to school and I was promoted to P5. I performed well in the last school term as I came 2nd out of over 100 children in my class. Thank you Beersheba”
